Joey Anderson Scores Game Winner in Four-Point Outing


ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Joey Anderson (Roseville, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the U.S. National Under-18 Team overtook St. Cloud State University, 7-6, here today at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Anderson had four points (2-2) in the game.

The Huskies jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period before Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn.) lit the lamp for the U.S. at 12:16. Trent Frederic (St. Louis, Mo.) knotted the score less than two minutes later off a feed from James Sanchez (Northbrook, Ill.).

St. Cloud State regained the lead 51 seconds into the middle stanza. The back-and-forth play continued as Anderson tallied a power-play marker at 2:11. Adam Fox (Jericho, N.Y.) and Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) collected assists. Two goals by the Huskies, one shorthanded, put the Under-18 Team down, 5-3, heading into the third period.

Patrick Khodorenko (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored at 5:37 of the third frame to cut the St. Cloud State lead back to one. Frederic and Matthew Hellickson (Rogers, Minn.) earned helpers on the play. The Huskies came right back at 8:24 before scores by Keller and Frederic tied the contest at six goals apiece.

Anderson capped the game with his overtime tally 22 seconds into the extra frame. Fox and Keller collected assists.

Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.) stopped 29 shots in the victory for the U.S., while St. Cloud State's Rasmus Reijola made 28 saves in the setback.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team will next jump back into United States Hockey League action on Friday, Jan. 8, against the Sioux Falls Stampede before flipping back to college action against the University of North Dakota the next night (Jan. 9).
