DAWSON CREEK, British Columbia - Sean Dhooghe (Aurora, Ill.) tallied two goals, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell short, 5-4, against Sweden in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 World Under-17 Challenge. Team USA will compete in a placement game tomorrow (Nov. 6); the game time, location and opponent are to be determined.

The U.S. jumped out in front just 1:27 into the first period when a point shot from Max Gildon (Plano, Texas) found its way behind the Swedish goaltender. Sweden battled back, netting power-play and even-strength markers just 1:56 apart to take the 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

In the middle period, Sweden increased its lead to two scores at 11:26. Dhooghe scored the first of his two goals when Sweden turned the puck over in their own zone and it found him in the slot, making the score 3-2. However, Sweden would retake its two-goal lead in the final two minutes of the period, chasing U.S. goaltender Adam Scheel (Lakewood, Ohio).

Alone in front of the net, Logan Hutsko (North Caldwell, N.J.) took a Quinn Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) feed from the corner and notched his first goal of the tournament midway through the final frame. The U.S. continued to aggressively forecheck, creating a number of quality scoring chances. However, Sweden capped their victory with a empty-net goal with 19 seconds remaining on the clock.

Sweden turned over the puck in their own zone with nine seconds left on the clock, and Dhooghe potted his second goal of the game from the slot, sending it over the Swedish goaltender’s shoulder for the 5-4 final score.

U.S. goaltender Dylan St. Cyr (Northville, Mich.) played the last 21:07 of the game, stopping all four shots he faced.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team is back in action tomorrow with the game time, location and opponent to be determined pending the outcome of today’s remaining  quarterfinal match-ups.
