U17s Host Lincoln while the U18s Enjoy Bye Week

The U.S. National Under-17 Team continues its home stand with two United States Hockey League contests this weekend at USA Hockey Arena, while the U18s have a bye week.

SEEING STARS: The U17s host the Lincoln Stars at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. The Stars sit atop the USHL Western Conference standings with a 6-1 record.

“Our players are realizing just how difficult it is to play in the USHL,” U17 coach Don Granato said. “Once again this week, we will face an experienced and older team. We will get a chance to spend time in practice this week working on different areas as well as getting some time in the weight room.”

The U17s dropped an 8-1 decision to Madison on Friday before earning a point in a 3-2 shootout loss to Madison on Saturday. Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa.) tallied the lone goal while goalie Dylan St. Cyr (Northville, Mich.) made 18 saves on Friday. The next night, Adam Scheel (Lakewood, Ohio) stopped 42 shots while Graham Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.) and Barratt tallied the goals.

“I was really proud of our team’s effort on Saturday as we were able to pick up one point in league play,” Granato said. “They really responded after a tough outing on Friday.”

BYE WEEKEND: The U18s enjoy a bye weekend before returning to action Oct. 30 against the Chicago Steel at USA Hockey Arena.

The U18s earned back-to-back road wins over college opponents this past weekend, beating Boston University 7-4 on Friday and Dartmouth College 5-4 on Saturday.

Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn.) and Trent Frederic (St. Louis) each scored a pair of goals at BU. Will Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), Griffin Luce (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Casey Mittelstadt (Eden Prairie, Minn.) added single goals, while goalie Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.) had 41 saves.

Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) tallied a pair of goals, including the game winner on the power play with 21 seconds left, at Dartmouth. Bellows had two goals and four points, while Adam Fox (Jericho, N.Y.) had the other goal in the win. Joseph Woll (St. Louis, Mo.) finished with 19 saves.

“For the guys, it is starting to show what they can do when we play two Division I opponents on back-to-back nights” said U18 coach Danton Cole, whose squad is 4-0-1 (W-L-T) in its last five games. “It was a tough test, but I thought we played well on the second night. It is a good sign of what we can do, and our players are starting to see that.

“It will be good to have a bye week. We can get some time off-ice and in the weight room. We can make some steps in where we want to be as a team.”
