Adam Scheel turns aside 42 of 44 Madison shots

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Adam Scheel (Lakeville, Ohio) made 42 saves, while Graham Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.) and Evan Barrett (Bristol, Pa.) potted the two USA goals, as U.S. National Under-17 Team earned a point in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Madison Capitols here tonight at USA Hockey Arena.

The scoreless opening frame featured back-and-forth, physical play, and Scheel turned aside 15 Madison shots. Team USA’s most quality chances included a one-timer from Jacob Tortora (Victor, N.Y.) and two center-slot chances from Logan Cockerill (Brighton, Mich.) and Logan Hutsko (North Caldwell, N.J.) but all were denied.

Madison got on the board first at 8:12 of the second period. Four minutes later, Slaggert tallied the equalizer on a turnaround shot from the bottom of the right circle. Later, Randy Hernandez  (Miami, Fla.) carried up the left wing and slid a cross-ice pass to Max Gildon (Plano, Texas) for a shot from the top of the right circle. Barratt chipped in the rebound to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead going into the third period.

Madison again notched the equalizer early in the third period. The goaltenders continued to duel through the remainder of the frame, as well as seven minutes 4-on-4 and 3-on-3 overtime. USA fired 29 shots at Madison’s Ryan Edquist in the final 27 minutes of play, while Scheel stopped 15-of-16 shots in the final two frames.

Madison’s Haralds Egle scored the lone goal in the three-aside shootout.

The U17s are back in action next weekend, Oct. 23 and 24, against the United States Hockey League’s Lincoln Stars. Both games are 7 p.m. ET starts at USA Hockey Arena.
