MUSKEGON, Mich. - Patrick Khodorenko (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and William Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) each notched two goals and goalie Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.) turned in a 28-save performance as the U.S. National Under-17 Team blanked the Muskegon Lumberjacks, 4-0, here tonight at L.C. Walker Arena.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first period, but Khodorenko struck just 1:51 into the middle frame to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead through 40 minutes of play. After a turnover at center, Ryan Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) chipped the puck to Joey Anderson (Roseville, Minn.) at the offensive blue line. Anderson managed to move it to Khodorenko, who skated into the zone, shot and scored from the top of the left circle.
The Under-17 Team added three goals in the third period to close out the 4-0 victory. Lockwood scored 53 seconds into the stanza when he knocked in a loose puck from the slot. Max Jones (Rochester, Mich.) and Nick Pastujov (Bradenton, Fla.) earned assists on the play. Khodorenko's second goal of the contest came 4:26 after Lockwood lit the lamp to give Team USA a 3-0 advantage. Keeghan Howdeshell (Brighton, Mich.) started the scoring play sending a shot towards the net. The puck was directed to the end boards where Anderson picked it up and fed Khodorenko in front for the one-timer goal. Another goal by Lockwood - this time an empty-netter - closed the scoring. Jones and Pastujov assisted on Lockwood's empty-net marker.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team is back in action tomorrow (April 4) in Bensenville, Illinois to face the Chicago Steel. Puck-drop is set for 8 p.m. ET at The Edge Ice Arena.
