ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Keeghan Howdeshell (Brighton, Mich.) and Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) each scored one goal, and goaltender Joseph Woll (Dardenne Prairie, Mo.) made 22 saves, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team was clipped by the Bloomington Thunder, 3-2, here tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. These same two squads will meet in a rematch tomorrow (Jan. 25) afternoon.
The two teams traded goals in the opening period as Bloomington scored 12:52 into the game and Team USA answered with one minute to play in the frame. After the Thunder scored on a strange bounce off a U.S. stick, Howdeshell knotted the score on the power play six minutes later. A Chad Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) shot sailed over the net, but Howdeshell tracked the puck, settled it down and beat the goalie from the edge of the crease. Adam Fox (Jericho, N.Y.) also assisted on the play.
Keller gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead 5:14 into the middle frame with a shorthanded goal. The play started when Fox dished the puck to Joey Anderson (Roseville, Minn.) in the left circle. Anderson took the pass, waited and hit Keller streaking to the net, where Keller tapped the puck in. The Thunder knotted it up at the 8:49 mark, and the two teams skated into the second intermission locked at 2-2.
Bloomington scored the game-winner 9:52 into the final period - a power-play tally from the point - to close out the 3-2 victory.
