ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Joey Anderson (Roseville, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime and goaltender Joseph Woll (Dardenne Prairie, Mo.) made 43 saves as the U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated the Chicago Steel, 3-2, here this afternoon at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Chicago took the first game of the two-game mini series last night, 3-1.
Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) started the scoring 9:03 into the first frame. After creating a turnover at center, Anderson scooped the puck to Chad Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) streaking into the zone. Krys pulled up and fed Keller in the middle of the ice, and Keller managed to gather the puck, move it to his backhand and score. William Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) doubled the U.S. lead with a goal from the edge of the crease at 15:35. Graham McPhee (Bethesda, Md.) left the puck for Patrick Khodorenko (Walnut Creek, Calif.) in the corner, where Khodorenko picked it up, walked it into the circle and hit Lockwood backdoor with a pass. Lockwood fought off a Chicago defender's stick and knocked the puck over a sprawling Lassi Yrjola to make it 2-0.
Neither team scored in the second period before Chicago stormed back to tie the game with a pair of goals in the third frame.
Then, just 39 seconds into overtime, Keller fed Anderson in the slot and Anderson sent a wrister into the back of the net to clinch the victory for Team USA.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team next hosts the Bloomington Thunder for a two-game set next weekend (Jan. 24-25). Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Both games will be available live on FASTHockey.com.
