ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Trent Frederic (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime and Joseph Woll (Dardenne Prairie, Mo.) made 48 saves as the U.S. National Under-17 Team edged Green Bay, 4-3, to complete a two-game weekend sweep tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. The U17s previously defeated the Gamblers, 5-4, in overtime last night.
Green Bay struck just 2:28 into the contest, but Team USA rallied and built a 2-1 lead by the first intermission. James Sanchez (Northbrook, Ill.) tied the game at 5:13 with a power-play marker. A Ryan Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) shot from the point bounced in front to Sanchez, who turned and batted the loose puck in. Luke Martin (St. Louis, Mo.) was credited with the secondary assist on the play. Then, at 7:09, Joey Anderson (Roseville, Minn.) buried the puck past Jason Pawloski to put the U.S. on top, 2-1. Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) started the play by wheeling into the offensive zone and around the net before dishing to Nick Pastujov (Bradenton, Fla.) at the doorstep. Pastujov's one-time attempt was stopped, but sat in the crease long enough for Anderson to swoop in and knock the puck home.
Two straight goals by the Gamblers gave them a 3-2 lead by the 12:10 mark of the middle frame, but Team USA again responded to knot the score at 3-3 after 40 minutes. With just 60 seconds remaining in the period, the U17s created an odd-man rush. Keller carried the puck into the zone, slammed on the brakes and sauced a pass to Anderson in the middle. Anderson quickly gathered the pass and fed Adam Fox (Jericho, N.Y.) in the left circle. Fox threw a shot into the top corner of the net.
Following a scoreless third period in which Green Bay held a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal, Frederic got a stick on a Fox centering pass with 1:48 remaining in overtime and put it off the far post and in to clinch Team USA's second straight overtime win.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team next heads out on the road for two contests against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Jan. 9-10. Both games are slated for 8:05 p.m. ET at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena and can be seen live on FASTHockey.com.
