MUSKEGON, Mich. - Goaltender Joseph Woll (Dardenne Prairie, Mo.) turned aside 35 shots but the U.S. National Under-17 Team was defeated by the Muskegon Lumberjacks, 4-2, here tonight at L.C. Walker Arena.
The Lumberjacks tallied the game's first goal on the power play with just four seconds remaining in the opening period.
James Sanchez (Northbrook, Ill.) knotted the game at 7:52 of the second stanza. Ryan Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) assisted on the score. Muskegon and the U.S. then traded power-play markers late in the frame. The Lumberjacks struck at 15:53 while Adam Fox (Jericho, N.Y.) potted Team USA's special-teams goal at 19:08. Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) earned the helper.
Muskegon's second power-play goal, scored at the 5:44 mark of the third frame, put the Under-17 Team down by one, 3-2. In need of the equalizer with time winding down, the U.S. pulled Woll in favor of the extra attacker. The Lumberjacks capitalized and tallied an empty-net goal at 19:30 to seal the victory over the U17s.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team has next weekend off as the squad prepares for the upcoming 2014 U17 Four Nations Tournament. The tournament runs from Dec. 16-20, at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube and features teams from Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland and the United States.
Team USA was outshot by Muskegon, 39-21 ... The U.S. went 1-5 on the power play while the Lumberjacks went 3-3 ... Tonight's game marked the fourth of five scheduled match ups between the U17s and Muskegon this season ... National Team Development Program squads and Muskegon will meet a total of 10 times this winter, as the U18 Team also plays the Lumberjacks five times ... No other United States Hockey League team will play the NTDP as often as Muskegon this season.
