ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.) stopped 19 of 21 shots he faced, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team was held scoreless and were shutout by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 6-0, here tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. The contest was the first of back-to-back games between the squads this weekend.
Team USA and Cedar Rapids skated to a 0-0 draw in the first frame. The U17s outshot its opponent, 13-3, but could not solve netminder Ryan Larkin as he held the U.S. without a goal.
The RoughRiders notched back-to-back markers on the power play to stake a 2-0 lead over the U.S. through the midway point of the second stanza. Two additional Cedar Rapids goals, scored 18 seconds apart, doubled the advantage over Team USA heading into the intermission.
Two tallies by the RoughRiders in the third period, scored at 1:44 and 15:27 respectively, sent the Under-17 Team away with a 6-0 shutout loss.
Joseph Woll (Dardenne Prairie, Mo.) made the start in net for Team USA making five saves before being pulled in favor of Oettinger.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team and Cedar Rapids will meet in a rematch tomorrow (Nov. 22) night at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. EST and can be viewed online through FASTHockey.com.
Team USA was outshot by Cedar Rapids, 30-27 ... The U.S. went 0-3 on the power play while the RoughRiders were 2-6 ... The U17s and Cedar Rapids will play four times this winter, as the younger NTDP group travels to Iowa for a two-game weekend against the RoughRiders in January ... The U18s don’t play Cedar Rapids again in 2014-15.
