ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Max Jones (Rochester, Mich.) and William Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) each scored goals, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Tri-City Storm, 4-2, here tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
The Storm got on the board first with a power-play marker from Joel Herbert. Just over one minute later Matthew Freytag scored Tri-City’s second goal. Team USA managed nine shots in the first period but was held scoreless.
The U17s tallied their first goal of the night 14:32 into the second frame with a far-side shot from Jones. Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) and Chad Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) combined to help set up the power-play strike. Tri-City notched two more goals to send the U.S. to the locker room down 4-1 after two frames.
Lockwood fired a high wrist shot past Alec Dillon to cut the Storm lead in half at the 11:13 mark of the third stanza. Ryan Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) collected the lone assist on the play. Lockwood’s tally was as close as Team USA would manage and the U17s were doubled up by Tri-City, 4-2.
Joseph Woll (Dardenne Prairie, Mo.) made 33 saves in net for the U.S. in the loss, while Dillon kicked out 21 shots for the Storm in the victory.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team and Tri-City Storm return to the Ann Arbor Ice Cube for a rematch tomorrow (Oct. 25) night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Live streaming video will be available at FASTHockey.
Tri-City outshot Team USA, 37-23 ... The U.S. went 1-5 on the power play while the Storm went 2-5 ...
