CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Parker Trottier (Edina, Minn.) tied the game up with :53 seconds to play as Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) tallied the game winner :20 seconds later as the U.S. National Under-18 Team came back against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 5-4, tonight inside ImOn Ice Arena.
The RoughRiders opened up the scoring in the first on the power play and made it 1-0 at 1:41.
Team USA answered though, at 12:50, as AJ Francisco (Hermantown, Minn.) tallied his fourth of the season. The defenseman rushed into the zone after he corralled a pass from Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) in the neutral zone and lasered it past starting RoughRider netminder Ryan Cameron.
The U.S. kept rolling in the opening frame as Tyler Martyniuk (Washington Twp., Mich.) lit the lamp for his first of the year. Martyniuk touched a pass to Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.) who entered the zone and gave it back to Martyniuk. A quick wrister beat Cameron at 13:23 to take a 2-1 lead.
The RoughRiders nearly knotted things up at 16:28 with a point-blank shot off a turnover, but starting U.S. goaltender Brady Knowling (Chicago, Ill.) made the stop to keep Team USA ahead at the break.
Cedar Rapids opened the second period in the same way it did the first and made it a tie game at 4:36. Casey Mutryn (Norwell, Mass.) regained the lead for the U.S. 1:36 later on the power play to make it 3-2. Off an offensive-zone draw, a loose puck trickled towards the net as Mutryn picked it up, worked around a defender and found twine. However, the RoughRiders evened things up at three on the power play at 14:35.
The RoughRiders regained its lead and made it 4-3 :20 seconds into the third.
Team USA called a timeout with 1:53 to go and emptied its net for one last push to even things up. The U.S. held its own as the RoughRiders didn't posses the puck while Trottier evened things up at 19:07. Beuker skated in the offensive zone with a puck and fired it on net near the blue line. An initial save was picked up by Trottier who backhanded it into the net to tie the game with under a minute to go.
The game neared overtime, but Berchild netted the eventual game winner :20 seconds later. Mutryn upped the forecheck on a Team USA clear and forced a turnover before he set himself up for a shot. He threw one on net as it was redirected off the tape of Nelson into the pads of Cameron, but bounced off as Berchild had an open net to work with. Berchild finished off the game winner as Team USA completed the comeback and won, 5-4.
Knowling turned aside 20 shots in the win.
