Meyer Ties Game Late and Scores the Winner in Overtime

PLYMOUTH, Mich. Carter Meyer (Winchester, Mass.) scores late in the third period and the overtime game winner as the U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated the Green Bay Gamblers in front of a huge crowd at USA Hockey Arena.

Team USA jumped on the board first with a Finnegan Sears (Medford, Mass.) power play tally. Freddie Schneider (Edina, Minn.) took the puck at the top of the circle and drove towards the net. Faking the shot, he slid the puck over to Sears who one-timed the puck into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Just over two minutes later, the U17s went up 2-0. Meyer beat the defender wide, which created a two-on-one, where Meyer found Nolan Fitzhenry (Andover, Minn.) who had a wide open net for the early two goal advantage.

Green Bay made it. 2-1 game going into the second period, as a shot from Gavin Katz got them on the board.

A minute into the middle period, Team USA answered and regained a two goal advantage. On the rush, Benjamin Geiger (Northfield, Minn.) jumped up into the play, where Sam Pandolfo (Winchester, Mass.) found him in the middle of the zone for the tip in goal.

The Gamblers scored 50 seconds later, adding a goal to make the score 3-2.

However, the Under-17's had a response of their own to continue the hectic start to the period. At the 17:15 mark, Easton Johnson (Luverne, Minn.) blew past the defender, getting tripped on the way by. On his back, he passed the puck over to Braden Horton (Souderton, Pa.) , who made a move on the goaltender and put it home.

Capitalizing off of a U.S. turnover, Green Bay scored to get back within one. Then added a power play marker, which made the score 4-4 heading into the final frame.

Gamblers proceeded to stay hot in the third period when Gavin Katz added his second of the game, which gave Green Bay their first lead of the game.

With less than two minutes left, Meyer played hero hockey for the U17s. Taking the puck from his own end, he skated up the ice, making a dazzling move on the defender which gave him enough room to put the puck past the Gamblers goaltender to the tie the game and send it into overtime.

In overtime, Meyer's number was once again called for heroics. Gaining the puck in the neutral zone from Fitzhenry, Meyer walked into the offensive end, and sniped one passed the blocker for the 6-5 Team USA win.

Eli Winters (Muskegon, Mich.) started in net and made 24 stops in the victory.
