YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Three different players scored for the U.S. National Under-17 Team but fell 8–3 to the Youngstown Phantoms on Wednesday night at the Covelli Centre.
Easton Johnson (Luverne, Minn.) got things going quickly, scoring just 54 seconds into the game. After a feed up into the zone by Brayden Willis (Gilbert, Ariz.), the puck bounced around until it found the stick of Johnson, who fired it passed the blocker of the Youngstown goaltender for the early 1-0 lead.
Youngstown tied the contest seven minutes later on a shorthanded goal by Jakub Hes.
Team USA regained the lead right as their power play ended on a shot from Nolan Fitzhenry (Andover, Minn.). After circling around the offensive zone, Fitzhenry dropped the puck off to Diego Gutierrez (Flower Mound, Texas). Gutierrez passed it right back to Fitzhenry who blasted it into the back of the net for his 17th goal of the season.
The Phantoms tied the game right before the end of the first period on a play from Kazumo Sasaki.
Momentum was swung in the second period, as Youngstown scored three straight goals to take the lead and the three goal advantage into the final frame.
In the third period, Carter Meyer (Winchester, Mass.) tried to get Team USA back into the contest. On the power play, Gutierrez fed Meyer near the top of the circle, who blasted the one-timer into the back of the net to cut the lead to two goals.
From there, the Phantoms took control, scoring three goals to seal a 8–3 victory.
