YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio. - The U.S. National Under-18 Team fell in a shootout against the Youngstown Phantoms in a 1-0 final tonight inside Covelli Centre.
It was an even, back-and-forth affair between the two teams as the U.S. held a 9-5 edge in shots after 20. Lukas Zajic (Plainfield, Ill.) nearly put Team USA on the board with a backhand shot and JJ Marthaler (Superior, Wis.) almost cleaned up the rebound but was turned aside to keep it 0-0 after one.
The second period replicated the first as neither team found the back of the net. The shot chart favored the Phantoms though as it held a 10-2 during the middle 20 with a handful coming on the power play but starting U.S. netminder Luke Carrithers (Maple Grove, Minn.) turned them all aside.
Just like the periods previous, the final 20 of regulation saw neither team light the lamp as the Phantoms held a narrow 7-6 edge in the shot category in the third. Sixty minutes of play wasn't enough as the game stayed 0-0 headed into overtime.
The U.S. had a pair of good look in the opening minutes of overtime as the Phantom's had a chance at 2:59 but Carrithers turned aside a rush opportunity. The U.S. had one final look with :25 seconds to go but didn't find twine as the puck shot down the other way for the Phantoms final chance. All alone, Carrithers poked his stick out and saved the potential game winner to force a shootout.
The Phantoms converted on its second attempt on the shootout as Team USA was stopped on all three attempts as the U18s fell, 1-0.
Carrithers made all 23 saves through regulation and overtime.
The U18s are back at USA Hockey Arena Wednesday (Dec. 10) for a rematch against Youngstown as it'll host the Phantoms at 10:30 am.m ET. Tickets are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix or by calling the box office at 734-453-8400.
