CALGARY, Alberta - Brady Knowling (Chicago, Ill.) turned aside 42 shots as the U.S. National Under-18 Team scored in all three periods to earn a 4-2 win against the CHL Prospects in the CHL-USA Prospects Challenge opener tonight inside the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Team USA got on the board first on its second shot of the game with help from Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) at 7:29. After a blocked shot, Wyatt Cullen (Moorhead, Minn.) put pressure on the CHL's defender and forced a neutral-zone turnover. Cullen skated down the wing and dashed into the slot as the puck fell to Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) Berchild made a touch pass to Beuker at the crease who put it past CHL's starting netminder Harrison Boettiger.

Box Score

Jamie Glance (Stratham, N.H.) nearly made it 2-0 at 16:25 but rang his shot off the pipe as Beuker's goal stood as the only goal from either side in the opening 20. Knowling played sound in net in the first and stopped all 13 shots faced.

Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.) put the U.S. up a pair early in the second at 3:31. Nelson won the offensive-zone draw back to Luke Schairer (Charlotte, N.C.) before he sped to the net. Schairer's shot was saved, but Nelson was on the doorstep to clean up the rebound.

The CHL Prospects got one back and made it 2-1 at 13:53 of the second as the U.S. headed into the locker room with the lead after two.

Victor Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) nearly opened the scoring in the third at 1:52 during 4-on-3 play with a quick move in the crease but was turned aside.

The U.S. drew a penalty as Cullen converted on the power play to put Team USA back up a pair at 6:46. After the puck was worked around, Cullen fed AJ Francisco (Hermantown, Minn.) who quickly gave it back to Cullen and fired it past Boettiger for the tally.

The CHL Prospects answered though and got back on the board at 13:17 to make it a one-goal game late.

Team CHL pulled Boettiger with 2:20 to go for the extra attacker as Glance took advantage of the empty net for an insurance goal as Team USA went on to win, 4-2.
