ULRICEHAMN, Sweden - The U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to host country Sweden, 6-5, in its final game of the Five-Nations Tournament inside Lassalyckans Ishall.
It was a tough first period from each side as a total of 25 shots on goal was seen in the opening 20 with nine from Team USA. Special teams from both ends was also displayed as a total of 10 penalties were called to open the ice for both teams. It was Sweden though that converted on a 5-on-3 power play at 13:05 for the lone goal of the period.
Sweden made it 2-0 early in the second, at 2:00, off its second power play goal of the evening. Team USA and Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.) answered with a power play goal of his own at 10:33 of the period. A battle along the board in the neutral zone popped the puck out to Jamie Glance (Stratham, N.H.) as he skated into the zone. Glance dashed towards the net but dropped a pass back to Nelson at the faceoff dot and fired it past Sweden's starting netminder Kevin Törnblom.
Sweden responded though and netted two-straight goals, 6:08 a part, with one coming from the power play to make it 4-1.
Time was ticking down in the second period as it appeared Team USA would take a three-goal deficit into the locker room, but Glance tallied his second point of the evening with a goal. Victor Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) found a flying puck and gloved it down before he found the tape of Glance. Glance sped into the zone and found twine to make it 4-2 after 40.
Team USA came out of the gate hot as the U.S. won the opening faceoff and Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) corralled it in the offensive zone. He found Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) past the Swedish line of defense and lit the lamp :06 seconds in.
Beuker’s goal was the beginning of three-straight U.S. goals. Logan Stuart (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) knotted the game up 5:54 later and similar to the goal prior, came off the faceoff. The U.S. quickly worked it around the offensive zone before a shot was blocked, but Stuart picked it up at the crease and fired it home.
Lukas Zajic (Plainfield, Ill.) gave Team USA its first lead of the game near the midway point at 9:21. Berchild skated towards the dot and sauced a backhand pass to Zajic in the slot to make it 5-4.
Sweden answered, however, and scored two goals 2:17 apart to take a 6-5 lead with 5:25 to play.
Team USA gave one final push with its net empty but couldn’t convert as it fell in the tournament closer, 6-5.
Brady Knowling (Chicago, Ill.) started in net for the U.S. and turned aside 28 shots.
