ULRICEHAMN, Sweden - Eleven players tallied at least a point as the U.S. National Under-18 Team scored in all three periods to defeat Switzerland, 5-2, this afternoon in its Five-Nations Tournament opener inside Lassalyckans Ishall.
Team USA struck first as Jamie Glance (Stratham, N.H.) got the first tally of the tournament at 9:29 of the first on the power play. Wyatt Cullen (Moorhead, Minn.) danced around the Swiss offensive zone before he found Glance who took a stride into the slot and fired it past starting Swiss netminder Yannis Zambelli.
Switzerland responded 6:50 later with its own power play goal to even things up at one.
Cullen added his second point of the evening with a tally of his own at 18:03 of the period. Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) forced an offensive zone turnover and found Cullen streaking towards the slot before he fired it home.
The U.S. kept it rolling in the second as a mishandled puck turned into a Logan Lutner (Maple Grove, Minn.) goal at 3:49. After it skipped over a Swiss stick in the neutral zone, Lutner sped into the zone and sent a shot over Zambelli's shoulder.
Another Team USA power play goal was added to the board as Victor Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) scored at 17:20 of the second. Tic-tac-toe passing was displayed between the trio of Casey Mutryn (Norwell, Mass.), Berchild and Plante as Berchild found Plante from beside the net to the slot for the goal.
Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.) opened the third period up with his first of the tournament at 5:01. Along the wing, Parker Trottier (Edina, Minn.) made a spinning pass to Nelson who sped in the slot and found twine to make it 5-1. Switzerland got one back as it made it a three-goal game off a turnover turned breakaway.
