Truro, Nova Scotia. - Nate Chizik (Warrington, Pa.) made 25 saves in net and Brayden Willis (Gilbert, Arizona) got a goal and assist as they helped the U.S. National Under-17 Team beat Finland in a shootout Monday afternoon at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
The U.S. got on the board early thanks to a strong effort from Carter Meyer (Winchester, Mass.). Diego Gutierrez (Flower Mound, Texas) started the play, moving the puck up from the neutral zone to Brayden Willis, who chipped it ahead to a streaking Meyer. Meyer drove past the Finnish defenseman and buried the puck past the goaltender to give Team USA a 1-0 lead.
Finland responded later in the period with a power-play goal, as Luca Santala converted on a one-timer to even the score at 1-1 heading into the second.
Coming soon!
Willis put the Under-17 Team back on top midway through the second period with a power-play goal of his own. As the man advantage wound down, Willis walked into the top of the circle and fired a laser over the shoulder of Finnish goaltender Patrik Joensuu to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead.
Nate Chizik held Finland to one goal through the frame, making several highlight-reel saves to preserve the lead.
Easton Johnson (Luverne, Minn.) added another power-play tally for Team USA at the 11-minute mark. After multiple scoring chances in front, the puck found Johnson at the point, and he ripped a shot through traffic to make it 3-1 heading into the third period.
In the final period, Finland made it a one goal early on after a scramble and shot from the point.
With eight minutes remaining in the game, Finland tied the contest after a rebound found the stick of Paavo Fugleberg in front of the net.
Neither team could break the deadlock through regulation or overtime, sending the game to a shootout tied at 3-3.
In the shootout, Finnegan Sears (Medford, Mass.), Freddie Schneider (Edina, Minn.), Carter Meyer scored for the U.S. and Nate Chizik stopped three out of the four shooters, the cap off the 4-3 win for the Under-17 Team.
The U17s return tomorrow night, Nov. 4, as they play Canada Red in the second game of the World U17 Hockey Challenge. Puck drop is set for 6:30 p.m. ET and will be streamed to HNLive.
