TRURO, Nova Scotia. Kane Barch (Plano, Texas) scored two as the Team USA took down Canada White in a pre-tournament matchup at Rath Eastlink Community Centre on Friday night.

Team USA jumped out to an early advantage after controlling the opening play and capitalizing midway through the first period. Christian Semetsis (Smithtown, N.Y.) created the opportunity by driving into the zone and sliding the puck across on the rush to Carter Meyer (Winchester, Mass.), who buried it past the Canada White goaltender for the game’s first tally.

Canada White evened the score at 5:59 when Liam Pue snuck one in.

The U.S. regained the lead late in the frame on the power play. Off the draw, the puck went back to Semetsis, who set up Nolan Fitzhenry (Andover, Minn.) at the top of the circle. Fitzhenry walked in and fired a shot over the shoulder of goaltender Sam Berthiaume to give the U17s a 2–1 edge heading into the intermission.

The second period featured end-to-end action as both teams battled for the next goal.

Team USA extended its lead to 3–1 at 12:58 when a net-front scramble paid off. A point shot was redirected by Rocco Pelosi (Sewell, N.J.), who fought for the loose puck before Kane Barch jammed it home for his first of the game.

The U17s’ strong defensive play continued to stand out, highlighted by a key penalty-kill goal late in the period. With Canada White pressing to cut the deficit, Easton Johnson (Luverne, Minn.) forced a turnover and chipped the puck ahead to Brayden Willis (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Carter Meyer on a 2-on-0 break. The pair executed a clean tic-tac-toe passing play, leaving Willis with an open net to make it 4–1.

The U.S. extended its lead late in the second period, taking full advantage of a power-play opportunity. Johnson sent the puck down low to Meyer, who worked his way around a defender before finding Barch wide open in front. Barch buried his second goal of the game to make it 5-1.

Canada White responded early in the third, as Maddox Schultz converted on the power play to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Team USA quickly answered when Freddie Schneider (Edina, Minn.) capitalized on a loose puck in front, with Finnegan Sears (Medford, Mass.) collecting the assist on the play for another power-play tally.

Kayden Stroeder and Ryan Hanrahan scored late for Canada White, but the U.S. Under-17 Team held on for the 6-4 victory.

Nate Chizik (Warrington, Pa.) and Eli Winters (Muskegon, Mich.) split time in net for Team USA, making 12 and 18 saves, respectively.

The U17s are back for the first game of the Under-17 Hockey Challenge when they take on Finland next Monday, Nov. 3. Puck drop is set for 4:30 p.m. ET and will be streamed on HNLive.
