PLYMOUTH, Mich. - In its final game before its international break, the U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to the Muskegon Lumberjacks, 5-3, tonight at USA Hockey Arena.
The Lumberjacks quickly made it 1-0 as it scored 1:06 into the opening frame. Casey Mutryn (Norwall, Mass.) nearly knotted things up at 11:38 as he sped down the wing past the Muskegon defense and fired one at starting Lumberjacks netminder Will Keane but was blocked aside.
Coming soon!
Just like the opening 20, Muskegon got on the board again early after it was awarded a penalty shot and converted on its try. Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) answered :30 seconds later though to cut the Lumberjacks lead in half. Wyatt Cullen (Moorhead, Minn.) fed the puck towards the crease from the goal line where Berchild was planted as he redirected the shot past Keane.
The Lumberjacks responded, however, on the power play at 3:13 to make it 3-1.
Near the midway mark of the second, Cullen nearly snuck around the net for a wraparound goal but was stopped on the goal line to keep Team USA's deficit at two. Muskegon made it a three-goal game at 12:22 with its second power play tally of the night.
It was Team USA's turn to get its special teams rolling as Mutryn tallied his second of the year at 15:10 in the second. Off a Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) draw, Luke Schairer (Charlotte, N.C.) sent a blast from the blue line as Mutryn tipped it in to make it 4-2.
Team USA kept up the pressure as Victor Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) made it a one-goal game with 8:26 to play. Nick Bogas shuffled the puck towards the neutral zone towards a speedy Plante who rushed in and fired it home. The U.S. emptied its net with a tick over 3:00 to play for one final push, but the Lumberjacks scored for the 5-3 final.
Brady Knowling (Chicago, Ill.) started in net for Team USA and stopped 13 shots.
The team now hits its first international break of the season as it'll travel to Sweden for the 5-Nations Tournament. Team USA opens up the tournament Wednesday (Nov. 5) with puck drop set for 9:00 a.m. ET.
