ITHACA, N.Y. - The U.S. National Under-18 Team found twine with an extra attacker under the :30 second mark but couldn't even things up as it fell to the Cornell Big Red, 5-4, tonight inside Lynah Rink.
Team USA lit the lamp first off the blade of Victor Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) for his fourth of the year. Jamie Glance (Stratham, N.H.) controlled the puck into the zone and fed it to Logan Stuart (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) near the slot. A quick touch pass directed the puck towards Plante on the wing who fired it past Cornell netminder Alexis Cournoyer at 4:44.
The Big Red, however, evened things up 3:31 later and eventually took the lead while skating 4-on-4 with 2:32 to play in the period.
The 4-on-4 scoring didn't end there as Team USA's unit evened the game up at two apiece. Off a strong rush, Brody George (Johnstown, Pa.) sauced a pass towards a streaking AJ Garcia (Romeoville, Ill.) down the wing before he tipped it past Cournoyer.
The Big Red answered in the following period 4:34 in to take a one-goal lead at 3-2. Cornell followed it up with another tally in the period at 13:28, on the power play, to jump ahead a pair. The Big Red tacked on its third goal of the middle frame and appeared to take a three-goal lead into the locker room, but Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.) beat the buzzer to cut the lead to two. Abe Barnett (Wilmette, Ill.) passed it to Nelson on the doorstep who made a quick handle of the puck and flipped it into the net with 0.2 seconds left.
The third period rolled on as Team USA emptied its net, down two, with under two minutes to go in an attempt to even things up. Cornell fired a shot down the ice from its defensive zone in hopes of an empty-net goal but icing was called to bring up a Team USA offensive zone draw. The U.S. won the ensuing draw as Glance found twine with :25 seconds to go to make it a one-goal game.
Despite Team USA's best efforts, it couldn't complete the comeback and fell, 5-4.
Brady Knowling (Chicago, Ill.) started in net for Team USA and turned aside 32 shots.
