MADISON, Wis. - The U.S. National Under-18 Team was defeated by the University of Wisconsin, 6-0, tonight at Kohl Center.
The Badgers got off to a quick start and scored a pair of goals 1:21 apart with 16:18 to go in the period. Wisconsin added one more :33 seconds before the halfway mark, on the power play, to make it 3-0. Starting U.S. netminder Luke Carrithers (Maple Grove, Minn.) was tested in the first 20 as he turned aside 16 of 19 shots faced.
Wisconsin made it 4-0 at the 6:50 mark of the second period. The U.S. upped the pressure as it went on its first power play of the contest moments after the Wisconsin goal and nearly got on the board off a Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.) shot. Nelson, once again, nearly opened the scoring for the U.S. at with 4:15 to play in the second off a wrap around chance, but starting Badger goaltender Eli Pulver got his paddle on it.
Although a goal was scored against in the middle 20, the U.S. found a groove and held strong defensively with only six shots allowed. The offense saw a slight spark as well and tallied nine shots on net, three more than it did in the first period.
Wisconsin, however, netted its fifth goal 2:56 into the third frame to extend its lead. The Badgers added one more with 1:53 to play as the U.S. fell, 6-0.
Carrithers turned aside 17 shots in the first 27:23, while Brady Knowling (Chicago, Ill.) stopped 21 in 32:37.
