Young guns lead offensive charge for Team USA

WATERLOO, Iowa Patrick Quinlan (Kennett Square, Pa.) made 29 saves and three different skaters scored as the U.S. National Under-18 Team held strong for a 3-1 win Saturday night over the Waterloo Black Hawks at Young Arena in Iowa.

The opening 20 minutes was high-paced and filled with action, but both netminders were up to the task as the frame ended without a goal. Team USA's Quinlan posted 10 saves while Waterloo's Kam Hendrickson collected a dozen.

Box Score

USA forward Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.) broke the ice just past the halfway mark of the second period. Will Moore (Ithaca, N.Y.) chopped the puck up the boards and Andrew O'Neill (Fargo, N.D.) lunged to chip it ahead to Nelson, who beat a lunging Hendrickson to make it 1-0 with 9:33 to play.

Quinlan made an exceptional stop late in the second as he robbed Western Michigan commit Ty Mason with the glove to keep the home team off the scoreboard.

The U.S. used the jolt of energy to grab a second goal before the second-period buzzer. Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) was the recipient of a pretty passing display for an easy tap-in score off help from Donny Bracco (Freeport, N.Y.) and LJ Mooney (West Mifflin, Pa.).

With 2:25 to play in regulation and their goaltender pulled. Waterloo finally lit the lamp as Dylan Compton converted on a point shot to put it past a screened Quinlan and make it a 2-1 contest.

After the RoughRiders cage was emptied again looking to tie the game, U18 captain Asher Barnett (Wilmette, Ill.) collected a loose puck and fired the length of the ice into the open cage for the game's 3-1 final.

Quinlan's phenomenal night ended with 29 stops and his 11th win of the campaign.

After sweeping the Iowa weekend, the U18s are back on the road next Friday night as they go west in Michigan to take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Puck drop is slated for 7:10 p.m. from Trinity Health Arena.
