HELSINKI, Finland - Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) and Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.) each added three points apiece to help the U.S. National Under-17 Team to an 8-5 win over Switzerland at the 2025 February Under-17 Five Nations Tournament this evening from Helsinki Ice Hall.
Nelson opened up scoring only 1:53 in, carrying the puck into the zone and firing along the right wing after Casey Mutryn (Norwell, Mass.) laid a hit to pick the puck free at the other end of the ice.
Logan Stuart (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) doubled the U17s' lead less than three minutes later, scooping up a rebound off an initial shot by Jamie Glance (Stratham, N.H.) to beat Swiss goaltender Nico Keller. Beuker added a helper as well.
JP Hurlbert (Allen, Texas) scored his first of the night just past the 10-minute mark on a power play, ripping a wrist-shot from the left dot off a perfectly placed pass from Lukas Zajic (Plainfield, Ill.). AJ Francisco (Hermantown, Minn.) set-up the play to earn his first point of the tournament.
The Swiss got on the board with a power-play goal at 14:19 to make it a 3-1 game, but Stuart restored the three-goal lead with 1:30 in the period, getting a tip on a Glance fire from far-side off some gorgeous stick-work to protect the puck. Beuker picked up an assist on the play.
A Kimi Sutter power-play goal brought the Swiss back within two 3:11 into the seconod stanza.
Wyatt Cullen (Moorhead, Minn.) tallied a fifth for Team USA, picking up a rebound behind the net off a rip from Nelson and slipping the puck past Keller at 4:26. Hurlbert tallied a helper as well.
Mutryn made it a 6-2 contest heading into the final frame, accepting a dish from Nelson at center ice and carrying the puck up the ice and around the Swiss net for his first of the night.
Moritz Rüegsegger added a third to Switzerland's count with a shorty just 16 seconds into the final stanza, but Hurlbert responded 28 seconds later with blast from the left dot on the power play.
Janis Grossniklaus made it a 7-3 score at the period's 6:50 mark, then Mutryn scored Team USA's eighth five minutes later with a rebound on the power play. A Niclas Rentsch shorthanded tally made the 8-5 final.
With the win, Team USA improves to 2-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in tournament play. Luke Carrithers (Maple Grove, Minn.) finished with 22 saves and Nelson was named the U.S. Player of Game.
