VIERUMÄKI, Finland - Jamie Glance (Stratham, N.H.), Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) scored in the shootout while Luke Carrithers (Maple Grove, Minn.) stopped all three Finnish chances to lift the U.S. National Under-17 Team to a 4-3 win over Finland in the Vierumäki Cup Championship today from Vierumäki Ice Arena.
With the win, the U17s finish the tournament undefeated with a 3-1-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record.
Casey Mutryn (Norwell, Mass.) lit the lamp just 2:29 into the game with a power-play score after Finland suffered a too many men penalty. Berchild grabbed a loose puck and fed Luke Schairer (Charlotte, N.C.) at the point, who sent a shot on net. Mutryn picked up the rebound to take a 1-0 lead.
Olli Wahlroos got the Finns on the board just over four minutes later to knot the game at 1-1 heading into the second.
Berchild regained Team USA's lead just shy of the halfway mark of the second, picking up the puck along the right boards after a failed Finnish clearing attempt, skating into the right circle and firing far-side over the shoulder of Pyry Lammi.
The Finns answered once again, this time with a Noel Pakarinen tip-in with 3:24 left in the second, then an Oliver Suvanto rebound score 3:28 into the final frame gave the Finns their first lead of the game.
A Glance score sent the game to overtime with 8:54 left in regulation. JJ Marthaler (Superior, Wis.) stole the puck in the defensive zone and chipped it up to Glance, who beat three Finnish skaters for possession and scored from the low slot.
Neither team was able to score in the five minute overtime as the game headed to a shootout for the 4-3 final.
Carrithers finished with 21 saves and Berchild was named the U.S. player of game as the team picked up their first international title.
The U17s will return stateside for Christmas break before they resume USHL play on December 27-28 vs the Chicago Steel. Their next puck drop is set for Friday, Dec. 27 at 8:05 p.m. ET from Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva, Ill..
