VIERUMÄKI, Finland - U.S. player of game Luke Carrithers (Maple Grove, Minn.) made 21 stops and Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) and Luke Schairer (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied two assists apiece as the U.S. National Under-17 Team took down Finland 3-1 to open the 2024 Vierumäki Cup.
Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) opened scoring just past the halfway mark of the opening frame, accepting a feed in the slot from Beuker and beating Finnish goaltender Pyry Lammi glove-side. Schairer also earned an assist on the power-play goal.
Casey Mutryn (Norwell, Mass.) made it a 2-0 game with a second power-play marker for the U.S., jamming a rebound through net traffic after an initial shot by Schairer 1:28 into the third. Beuker collected a helper as well.
The Finns came within one with 3:28 left in the contest as Olli Wahlroos found the back of the net.
But a Logan Stuart (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) empty-netter from Abe Barnett (Wilmette, Ill.) put the game on ice with just one second on the clock, bringing the final score to 3-1.
With the win, Team USA improves to 1-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in tournament play.
The U17s continue preliminary round action in the Vierumäki Cup tomorrow against Switzerland. Puck drop is set for 11:30 a.m. ET and the game can be streamed live here.
