PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Three different players scored, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped a 6-3 contest to the Green Bay Gamblers tonight from inside USA Hockey Arena.
AJ Garcia (Romeoville, Ill.) opened scoring just 58 seconds into the game, getting his stick on a Jonas Kemps (Santa Rosa, Calif.) shot from the point for the redirect. Abe Barnett (Wilmette, Ill.) earned an assist on the play as well.
The Gamblers tied it 2:43 later off a quick strike by Reece Cordray, then took a lead with 2:02 left in the period off a Will Zellers power-play score.
Jake Stuart (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tied the game 2:16 into the middle frame with a power-play goal, accepting a pass from younger brother Logan Stuart (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) at the point and skating into the slot for the score. Wyatt Cullen (Moorhead, Minn.) picked up a helper as well.
Owen Buesgens regained Green Bay's lead with a shot from the point just past the game's halfway point, Lukas Peterson made a 4-2 game with 5:12 left in the period, then Nick Knutson made things 5-2.
JP Hurlbert (Allen, Texas) added a third to the US tally with 2:50 to play, picking up a loose puck in the U.S. zone and skating up the ice for a score from the slot, but a Green Bay empty netter brought the final to 6-3.
The U17s are back at USA Hockey Arena Wednesday, Nov. 27 as they host the Youngstown Phantoms in the annual Thanksgiving game. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. ET and tickets are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix or by calling the box office at 734-453-8400.
