PLYMOUTH, Mich. JP Hurlbert (Allen, Texas) scored twice and Joey Slavick (Westland, Mich.) made a season-high 32 saves as the U.S. National Under-17 Team picked up a point, but fell to the Green Bay Gamblers, 5-4 in overtime, Friday night at USA Hockey Arena.

The Gamblers were the first to score, as Anthony Cardilli got his stick on a redirect 7:20 into the game to take a 1-0 lead.

Highlights

Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.) found a response just under two minutes later to knot it heading into the second. Victor Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) fed Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) along the left wing, who found Nelson for a one-timer five-hole.

The Gamblers regained their lead with 4.5 seconds on the clock off a Tanner Bruender breakaway.

Team USA headed to the power play 2:30 into the second after AJ Garcia (Romeoville, Ill.) drew a hooking penalty and Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) capitalized just seven seconds in with a wrister through traffic. Jonas Kemps (Santa Rosa, Calif.) dropped the puck back to Wyatt Cullen (Moorhead, Minn.) after an Andrew O'Neill (Fargo, N.D.) zone-draw win and Cullen found Berchild atop the right circle for the finish.

Niles Benson regained Green Bay's lead off a semi-breakaway with 5:50 left in the second.

JP Hurlbert (Allen, Texas) made it a 3-3 game with a rebound score from outside the paint with 1:55 left in the period. JJ Marthaler (Superior, Wis.) fed Nelson, who fired from the left wing. Dylan Johnson made the initial stop, but Hurlbert picked up the rebound for his first of the night.

Hurlbert added a second just 1:36 into the third. Logan Lutner (Maple Grove, Minn.) stopped a Green Bay clearing attempt with a dish to Hurlbert across the zone, who beat Johnson glove-side.

A lucky bounce off the stick of Will Zellers 3:17 later tied things at 4-4 to send the game to overtime, where Zellers would end the game on a one-timer with 6.7 seconds remaining on the OT clock.

Slavick made 32 saves to set a season high, including double digits in both the first (10) and third (12) periods, in a very impressive night for the netminder.

The two teams are back at USA Hockey Arena tomorrow for a rematch. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET and tickets are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix or by calling the box office at 734-453-8400.
