YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Harrison Boettiger (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) made 28 saves, but the U.S. National Under-18 Team could never find a lead in a 2-1 matinee loss to the Youngstown Phantoms Sunday afternoon at Covelli Centre.
Youngstown struck first in the opening period, converting on the game's first power-play opportunity. Adam Benak went through the crease for Jack Hextall on the back door, who slammed his one-timer past an outstretched Boettiger to make it 1-0 at 7:54.
While on their second penalty kill of the period, the U18s turned it into offense as Drew Schock's (Green Bay, Wis.) shorthanded marker evened the score with 17 seconds remaining in the period. Will Belle's (Minnetonka, Minn.) tenacious pressure led to a turnover and a shot that hit a Youngstown defender and into the air. Schock collected and beat Melvin Strahl five-hole to even the game after one period.
Despite a 10-5 Phantoms shot advantage in the middle frame, neither side could find the back of the net thanks in large part to Boettiger's huge save on Coleson Hanrahan right before the period buzzer.
Youngstown appeared to take a lead a little more than five minutes into the third, but the stick Justin Kerr's redirection attempt was ruled too high and the goal was waved off.
With 4:06 to play in regulation, it was another special teams score to put Youngstown ahead as this time, Kerr's deflection in front was good to give the home side a 2-1 lead.
Boettiger finished his afternoon with an impressive 28 total stops.
The U18s are back at USA Hockey Arena Thursday night as they host the Michigan State Spartans in Kroger College Series action. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET and tickets are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix or by calling the box office at 734-453-8400.
