PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Conrad Fondrk (White Bear Lake, Minn.) netted his fifth goal of the season, but that was all the offense the U.S. National Under-18 Team could muster in a 4-1 loss to Augustana University Friday night at USA Hockey Arena.
The visiting Vikings connected for the only goal of the opening frame. From behind the net, Brett Meerman found Hunter Bischoff in the slot who one-timed it home for a 1-0 lead.
Team USA's best chance of the period came from Richard Gallant (Concord, Mass.), firing one from the left wing with Drew Schock (Green Bay, Wis.) on the doorstep, but Josh Kotai kept the puck out.
Augustana doubled the lead early in the middle period off a quick odd-man rush. Colton Friesen went through the slot for Simon Falk, who put his shot in the top corner at 1:51 of the stanza.
With 4:52 to play in the second, Augustana made it three in a row off a pretty redirection in front by Quinn Rudrud.
Fondrk got Team USA on the board with a power-play marker before the close of the second. Jack Murtagh (East Greenbush, N.Y.) worked the puck to Will Moore (Ithaca, N.Y.) below the cage. He found Fondrk at the right circle, where he picked the far-side top corner from the faceoff dot to make it a 3-1 contest. The goal extended Fondrk's point streak to five consecutive games, tying a career high for the Boston University commit.
Augustana restored its three-goal lead with 7:50 to play in regulation as Owen Bohn banged home a loose puck floating in the crease.
Team USA pulled netminder Harrison Boettiger (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) with nearly four minutes to play in the game and applied pressure, but could not get one past Kotai as the game ended 4-1.
The two sides are back in action tomorrow night at USA Hockey Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET and tickets are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix or by calling the box office at 734-453-8400.
