Team USA falls to Sweden in overtime

SARNIA, Ontario Casey Mutryn (Norwell, Mass.) scored with 1:49 remaining in regulation to force overtime, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to Canada Red, 5-4, to finish fourth at the 2024 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Axel Elofsson got the Swedes on the board first, 2:05 into the game, with a lucky backdoor bounce that tipped off the skate of U.S. goaltender Luke Carrithers (Maple Grove, Minn.) and trickled over the line.

Victor Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) made it a 1-1 contest at 7:21 with a lightning one-timer outside the paint off a feed from Logan Lutner (Maple Grove, Minn.), who collected a seam pass from Mutryn across the zone.

Team USA took the lead off a Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) score, picking up the puck from JP Hurlbert (Allen, Texas) along the boards, skating into the slot and firing just 1:12 later.

Malte Gustafsson tied things up for the Swedes with 3:55 left in the first off a zone-draw win, then Vilgot Lidén gave them a 3-2 lead 2:10 into the middle frame with a score from the right circle.

Mutryn knotted things once again 4:38 into the final frame with a power-play goal, scooping up a loose puck off an initial chance by Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) and sending it glove-side past Milo Tjärnlund. Luke Schairer (Charlotte, N.C.) earned an assist as well, getting the play started at the top of the U.S. zone.

A Nils Bartholdsson power-play goal regained the Swedish lead with 7:40 left in regulation.

The U.S. pulled Carrithers from net for the extra skater and Mutryn tied things again with 1:49 to play, finishing a rebound chance just outside the paint off shot from Plante. Wyatt Cullen (Moorhead, Minn.) tallied an assist as well as the game went to overtime, but Elton Hermansson scored 16 seconds to claim the third-place rank for sweden.

Carrithers finished with 29 saves.
