PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Casey Mutryn (Norwell, Mass.) scored his first career goal, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped a 7-2 contest to the Muskegon Lumberjacks tonight inside USA Hockey Arena.
The opening 20 ended in a stalemate as Luke Carrithers (Maple Grove, Minn.) turned aside all 10 shots he faced, including an excellent power-play rebound chance with 11:01 left on the clock off an initial beam from the left circle.
Jamie Glance (Stratham, N.H.) had a great look from the right dot minutes later, but it bounced off the pad of Lumberjack netminder Shikhabutdin Gadzhiev.
Sam Wathier (Des Moines, Iowa) nearly broke through with a shot from the point on the power play, but it rang off the post.
Muskegon lit the lamp 3:07 into the middle frame as Kurt Gurkan whacked a rebound out of mid air past Carrithers. Jack Galanek doubled their lead with 12:58 on the clock off another rebound score, then Ethan Drabicki made it 3-0 2:22 later.
Teddy Spitznagel extended the Lumberjacks' lead with a power-play marker that bounced off Carrithers and in.
JP Hurlbert (Allen, Texas) got the U.S. on the board with 1:21 left in the period, snatching a puck picked free along the right boards by Jamie Glance (Stratham, N.H.) and beating Gadzhiev with a toe-drag move to make it 4-1 heading into the final frame.
The Jacks extended the lead once again with a pair of quick goals before the period's halfway mark to jump up 6-1.
Mutryn cut the lead with his first of the season at the 10:35 mark, intercepting a passing attempt just outside the paint and sniping a one-timer.
A Bauer Berry score with 8:17 left in the contest brought the final to 7-2.
The U17s are back at USA Hockey Arena tomorrow, set for a rematch with the Lumberjacks. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET and tickets are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix or by calling the box office at 734-453-8400.
