SIOUX CITY, Iowa - JP Hurlbert (Allen, Texas) scored twice and Kaenan Smith (Duluth, Minn.) made 31 saves to help the U.S. National Under-17 Team to their first USHL victory, taking down the Sioux City Musketeers, 5-4, Saturday night in Iowa.
The Musketeers were the first to light the lamp, as Drake Murray wired one from the right side 40 seconds in.
Team USA responded just 1:04 later as Hurlbert intercepted a seam pass attempt by the Sioux, skated into the zone and beat Samuel Urban glove-side with a forehand-backhand move.
The Musketeers regained the lead with a lucky bounce at the 9:39 mark as the puck deflected off Olivers Murnieks and in.
Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.) knotted the game at two apiece with 4:33 in the period finishing a perfectly placed centering feed from Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) just outside the paint. Wyatt Cullen (Moorhead, Minn.) picked up an assist on the play as well.
Nikita Klepov made it a 3-2 contest with 1:40 left on the clock, streaking down the right wing and firing at an angle.
A Victor Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) shorthanded goal 6:22 into the second tied the game, then a snipe from Berchild 1:51 later brought Team USA it's first lead of the weekend.
Plante forced a turnover on the blue line for a breakaway, turned on the jets and went stick-side for the equalizer.
Then Cullen took a hit atop the U.S. zone as he chipped the puck up to Logan Stuart (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) along the boards. Stuart skated up the ice with Berchild, who flew into the zone and ripped one over the shoulder of Urban.
Hurlbert extended Team USA's lead to 5-3 just 20 seconds before the buzzer with a breakaway score, set up by a beautiful stretch pass from AJ Garcia (Romeoville, Ill.), who intercepted a no-look attempt in the defensive zone to start the play.
Tate Pritchard cut the U.S. lead to one, beating Smith five-hole 4:46 into the final frame.
Smith was sturdy throughout the final frame as he made 14 stops in the third, and 31 overall, to pick up his first win for the U17s.
The U17s play their first ever game at USA Hockey Arena next Friday, Oct. 18 as they host the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET and tickets are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix or by calling the box office at 734-453-8400.
