SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Brody George and Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped their USHL opener by a 7-2 count to the Sioux City Musketeers from Tyson Events Center.
Giacomo Martino broke the ice 10:53 into the game with a rip from the right dot to give the Musketeers a 1-0 lead, then Sioux City doubled the lead 2:11 later as the puck bounced off Kason Muscutt's skate and in.
George got the U.S. on the board 2:52 into the middle frame, skating into the left circle and beating Musketeer goaltender Bjorn Bronas far-side after Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) forced a turnover along the boards and found George in stride.
Berchild knotted the game three minutes later with a power-play tally, picking up a pass from Casey Mutryn (Norwell, Mass.) and going five-hole.
Landen Gunderson regained the lead for the home team with a one-timer from the high slot at 12:26, then Martino added a fourth with a quick move outside the paint at 14:27.
Easton Hewson made it 5-2 just 14 seconds later, then Jackson Crowder flipped the puck past Carrithers for a sixth.
A tip-in from Tate Pritchard 6:38 into the third brought the final score to 7-2.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow night as they face off for a rematch from Tyson Events Center with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET. The game can be streamed live on FloHockey.
