ALBURQUERQUE, N.M. - Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored just 23 seconds into overtime to lift the U.S. National Under-17 Team to it's first win in a 3-2 overtime victory over the New Mexico Ice Wolves.
Berchild opened scoring 14:14 into the contest. Logan Stuart (Manhattan Beach, Calif) picked up the loose puck behind the U.S. net and dished it to Casey Mutryn (Norwell, Mass.) along the boards, who found Berchild at the top of the zone. Berchild skated up the right wing, cut to the slot and went stick side past Ice Wolves tender Brendan Holahan.
Issa Murakami found the equalizer for New Mexico 6:44 into the second off a centering feed from Jake Kasay, then Kasay made things 2-1 with a snipe from the right dot 2:51 into the final frame.
Dayne Beuker (Portland, Ore.) knotted things 5:36 later with a power-play marker, connecting with AJ Francisco (Hermantown, Minn.) at the point and firing through traffic to send the game to overtime.
Just moments into extra time, Berchild snatched the puck off the stick of an Ice Wolves defender right on the doorstep and flipped the puck by Holahan with some nifty stick work.
Patrick Quinlan (Kennett Square, Pa.) picked up the win in net, stopping 36 of the 38 shots he faced.
The U17s continue NAHL play on Wednesday (Sept. 18) as they head east to take on the Johnstown Tomahawks. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET and the game can be streamed live on USAHockeyTV.com.
