MIDDLETON, Wis. - Conrad Fondrk (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Cullen Potter (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Madison Capitols by a 5-2 count tonight inside Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.
Madison got things going with a trio goals in the first to take a 3-0 lead. Chris Delaney was the first to score, capitalizing on a turnover by NTDP alum Austin Burnevik 13:56 into the game.
Diego Johnson doubled Madison's lead 58 seconds later with a strike on the doorstep, then it was Andrew Kuzma who added a third from the low slot in the final 1:48 of the period.
James Hong made it a 4-0 game with a deflection 6:04 into the second stanza.
Fondrk got Team USA on the board with 2:36 left in the period. Richard Gallant (Concord, Mass.) chipped the puck free along the boards. Fondrk picked it up, wove around a Madison skater and flew up the ice on a two-on-one for the finish.
Potter cut the Capitols' lead in half 6:10 into the final frame. Kristian Epperson (Mequon, Wis.) fed Will Horcoff (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) at the right dot, who fired a shot off. Madison netminder Patriks Berzins made the initial stop, but Potter grabbed the rebound for his 16th goal of the season.
An empty-net goal from Andy Brandt with 1:28 to play brought the final tally to 5-2.
The two teams are back at it tomorrow night from Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET and the game will stream live on FloHockey.TV.
