CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Donny Bracco (Freeport, N.Y.) scored his first of the season and added an assist, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell by a 6-3 count to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders here tonight inside ImOn Ice Arena.
The RoughRiders opened the game's scoring with a pair of quick ones as Amine Hajibi put home a rebound 1:08 in, then Ben Muthersbaugh made it a 2-0 game with a wrister from the top of the right circle.
Joel Kjellberg added a third with a strike from the hashmarks to close the opening stanza.
Cullen Potter (Plymouth, Minn.) got the U.S. on the board 8:03 into the middle frame with a power-play goal. Bracco fed Potter the puck at the top of the zone, who whipped a wrister stick-side from the left circle.
Cedar Rapids regained the three-goal lead with a Ryan O'Connell tally from the high slot to make it a 4-1 game heading into the final 20.
Bracco brought Team USA within two just 31 seconds in, accepting a beautiful pass from Conrad Fondrk (White Bear Lake, Minn.) across the zone and burying a one-timer.
Will Belle (Minnetonka, Minn.) added a third to the U.S. tally, getting a stick on a Charlie Trethewey (Woodbine, Md.) shot from the point for the redirect 5:21 later.
A Riley Bassen tally on the doorstep made it a 5-3 game, then an Elliott Groenewold empty-net score brought the final tally to 6-3.
The two teams face off tomorrow night for a rematch inside ImOn Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 8:05 p.m. ET and the game can be seen live on FloHockey.TV.
