Potter nets game-winner

OSTRAVA, Czechia - Cullen Potter (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored the game-winner as the U.S. National Under-17 Team scored three unanswered to take down Switzerland, 3-2, in it's third game of the 2024 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament.

Team Switzerland was the first to light the lamp, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 as Florian Schenk sent home a quick one-timer with 6:57 to play in the opening frame. Manuel von Rohr doubled the Swiss lead just 52 seconds into the second with another power-play score off a feed from Schenk.

Box Score

Landon Hafele (Fairbanks, Alaska) got the U.S. on the board with 4:10 left in the second stanza, streaking up the ice with Cole McKinney (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Jake Stuart (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) in stride. Hafele accepted a feed from McKinney and beat Swiss netminder Matia Birchler with a one-timer.

McKinney found the answer 2:04 later. Will Belle (Minnetonka, Minn.) picked the puck free from a Swiss defender and chipped it to Richard Gallant (Concord, Mass.) at the bottom of the right circle. He dished it to McKinney who forced it between the pipe and Birchler's skate to tie the game heading into the final period of play.

Potter scored the game-winner at the 12:25 mark of the third, picking up a Conrad Fondrk (White Bear Lake, Minn.) centering feed amid a small net-front scramble and flipping it over the glove of Birchler. Charlie Trethewey (Woodbine, Md.) picked up an assist on the goal as well.

The U17s, now 2-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in tournament play, face Czechia tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. ET from Buly Arena in Kravaře, Czechia for their final game of the tournament.
