Team USA, Sweden Remain Undefeated in Five Nations
Sweden tops Czechia 9-4; USA ousts Finland 5-2
PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Games wrapped on day two of the 2024 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament from USA Hockey Arena as Sweden took down the Czechs, 9-4 in the day's opening game and the U.S. bested Finland, 5-2, in the day's second contest.
Sweden 9, Czechia 4
Team Sweden got on the board just 2:19 in with a goal by defensemen Leo Sahlin Wallenius, sneaking the puck through traffic and into the back of the net. Adam Hesselvall doubled the Swedish lead from the hashes with a power-play goal at 7:42 after a Lucas Pettersson shot redirected off of the Czechia netminder. A Jack Burglund feed from the corner to an open Willie Magnertoft in front of the net gave Sweden a 3-0 lead at just past the halfway mark of the first frame.
The second period featured eight goals between the two nations. Sweden tacked on another goal early in the period to take a 4-0 advantage. Jakob Ihs-Wozniak burried one netfront off a dish from Anton Frondell at 2:02, then Ihs-Wozniak tallied his second goal of the contest with a power-play tally at 7:12.
Team Czechia responded with two goals in 20 seconds with Marek Danicek netting one on the power play, and Oskar Lisler adding a second to cut the Swedish lead in half.
Ihs-Wozniak completed his hat-trick with 9:51 to play in the period, and a power-play goal fromo Frondell, who buried the puck home from the right circle, made it a 6-2 game.
Less than a minute later, Czechia’s Adam Novotny deked his way through the Swedish defense and tucked one home for the team’s third goal of the frame.
With less than 20 seconds left in the period, Pettersson tacked on a goal of his own for Sweden with Viggo Nordlund on the helper.
Czechia cut into the Swedish lead once more in the final frame with a power-play goal at 4:12. Petr Sikora sent the puck over to Lisler, who nailed the slap shot from the left circle for his second goal of the contest, but a Frondell tally at 11:27 brought the final score to 9-4.
Jakob Ihs-Wozniak was named the Player of the Game for Team Sweden, while Adam Benak earned the honors for Team Czechia.
Love Harenstam finished with 17 saves to pick up the win, improving Team Sweden's record to 1-1-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L), while Matyas Marik and Bretislav Vystrcil combined for 14 in net for Team Czechia as they fell to a 0-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record in tournament play.
USA 5, FINLAND 2
PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Cole Hutson's four-point night helped the U.S. National Under-18 Team to a 5-2 win over Finland here tonight at USA Hockey Arena, in Team USA's second game of the Five Nations tournament on home ice.
Finland opened up the scoring at 7:46 of the first period. After the initial rush from Daniel Nieminen, Markus Loponen’s pinpoint pass found Juho Keinanen for a wide-open slapshot and 1-0 lead for the Europeans.
USA's best chance in the opening frame came shorthanded on a Brendan McMorrow brekaway, but Finnish netminder Petteri Rimpinen stifled the attempt and all 12 U.S. shots on net.
Team USA got on the board to even the score at 8:34 of the second on the power play. Hutson set up a wide open Cole Eiserman from the right faceoff circle, where his one-timer ricochetted off the far-side post and in to tie the game.
The U18s took the lead less than minutes later on a James Hagens goal off feeds from Teddy Stiga and Hutson. Hagens' first shot was blocked by a defenseman, but he collected his own rebound and put it pas the falling Rimpinen. Hutson earned his 100th career NTDP with a helper on the 2-1 score.
USA netminder Nick Kempf kept the lead intact as he made a sprawling save with 73 seconds left in the period, robbing the try from Anton Kettunen. The Finnish forward tried to sneak it past Kempf, but he extended his left and gloved the backhand attempt to negate the scoring chance.
Off the ensuing faceoff, Brodie Ziemer doubled the USA lead to close out the three-goal second period. Hagens' pass hit Ziemer directly in front of the crease, who then turned and flipped a shot over Rimpinen’s right shoulder. Hutson tallied a secondary assist, his third point of the night.
Ziemer picked things up early in the third, notching his second of the game just 22 seconds into the period. Stiga found Hutson at the point, where he put the first shot on net. After the puck popped up after the initial save, Ziemer backhanded it out of mid-air and over the shoulder of Rimpinen for a 4-1 lead.
Finland got one back on a top-corner shot from Joona Saarelainen, assisted by Oliver Kopiloff and Mitja Jokinen, to reduce the USA lead to 4-2 with 6:28 left in the game.
Finland pulled the goalie with less than three minutes remaining, allowing USA to put the game on ice with a Stiga empty net goal. Dakoda Rheaume-Mullen punched the puck loose to pick up the lone helper and give him points in back-to-back games.
Kempf made 24 saves on 26 shots in his tournament debut, picking up the win in net for Team USA.
Team USA gets their off-day of the tournament tomorrow, before returning to the ice Friday night as they host Czechia.
