COLOGNE, Germany - Charlie Trethewey (Woodbine, Md.) netted one goal and added two assists as the U.S. National Under-17 Team skated to a 5-3 win over the Kölner EC U20 team at Lanxess Arena this evening.
Kölner was the first to light the lamp 4:55 into the first period, but Asher Barnett (Wilmette, Ill.) found the equalizer with 3:18 with help from Cole McKinney (Lake Forest, lll.) and Carter Amico (Westbrook, Maine). Trethewey then gave Team USA the lead heading into the second off a play by McKinney and Conrad Fondrk (White Bear Lake, Minn.).
Haeden Ellis (Buffalo, N.Y.) added a third for the U.S. 2:13 into the middle frame with Donny Bracco (Freeport, N.Y.) and Trethewey picking up assists.
The U20s found the response just 2:13 into the third, then tied the game with 9:25 left in the contest.
A goal from Andrew O'Neill (Fargo, N.D.) at the 11:17 mark of the third restored the U.S. lead, with helpers credited to Will Moore (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Jack Murtagh (East Greenbush, N.Y.), then Jake Stuart (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) sealed the game at 5-3, carrying the puck up the left wing and ripping a shot from the high slot just 11 seconds later. Trethewey and Bracco combined to set-up the play.
Patrick Quinlan (Kennett Square, Pa.) backstopped the U.S. in net on the way to the win.
The U17s continue play in Germany tomorrow, Dec. 14, as they take on the Jungadler Mannheim U20 team from SAP Arena at 1:00 p.m. ET.
