U17s erase three-goal deficit, but can't complete comeback

PLYMOUTH, Mich. LJ Mooney (West Mifflin, Pa.) carried the U.S. National Under-17 Team with two goals and an assist to erase a three-goal deficit, but were unable to complete the comeback and dropped a 4-3 overtime contest to the Chicago Steel Sunday afternoon at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

The Steel struck first as Mick Thompson went blocker-side from the high slot with 6:14 left in the opening period, then Kolin Sisson added another 1:49 later, finishing a wraparound pass to make it a 2-0 game heading into the middle frame.

Box Score

Joey DelGreco gave Chicago a three-goal advantage 27 seconds into the second with a one-timer off the rush.

It was LJ Mooney (West Mifflin, Pa.) who got the U.S. on the board at 13:31 on the power play, collecting the rebound of a Charlie Trethewey (Woodbine, Md.) chance and beating Chicago netminder Christian Manz with a quick score net-front. The play was set up by Donny Bracco (Freeport, N.Y.).

Will Moore (Ithaca, N.Y.) made it a one-goal game 4:50 into the third with another power-play score for the U.S. Tretheway dished the puck to Mooney along the blue line. Mooney slid it to a waiting Moore across the slot, who potted a one-timer.

Mooney found the equalizer with 1:39 left in regulation after Patrick Quinlan (Kennett Square, Pa.) headed to the bench for the extra attacker. Jack Murtagh (East Greenbush, N.Y.) found Cole McKinney (Lake Forest, Ill.) in the low slot. He went across the zone for Mooney and fired a wrister from the left circle to force overtime.

Charlie Major found the game-winner for Chicago 3:56 into overtime, flipping a backhander over Quinlan.

The U17s have next weekend off before their second international jaunt of the 2023-24 season as they head to Mannheim, Germany to face Jungadler Mannheim U20 on Tuesday, December 12 at 11:00 a.m. ET.
