PLYMOUTH, Mich. – The U.S National Under-17 Team closed out the series with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Saturday night with a 4-0 win inside USA Hockey Arena. Goaltender Nick Kempf (Morton Grove, Ill.) recorded his second shutout of the year and Noah Lapointe (Hinsdale, Ill.) tallied his first NTDP goal to lead the U17s to victory.

It was a quiet first period for both teams this evening, as Team USA had plenty of scoring chances, with seven shots on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net.

With less than two minutes left in the first period, roughing was called on Cedar Rapids giving Team USA a one-man advantage. The team was unable to get any good scoring chances but began the second period on the power play.

Highlights

At the start of the second period, the U17s were unable to capitalize on the power play and the game remained tied. Shane Vansaghi (St. Louis, Mo.) gave Team USA a 1-0 lead as he picked up the puck in the defensive zone, breaking away toward the RoughRiders netminder. Vansaghi flipped the puck over the pad of Sam Scopa to sound the horn for Team USA.

A minute later, it appeared Cedar Rapids found the back of the net, but it was called a no-goal. The play was challenged by the RoughRiders, but the call on the ice would stand.

With four minutes remaining in the second period, Team USA found the net an additional three times which started with a tally from Kristian Epperson (Mequon, Wis.). Brodie Ziemer (Hutchinson, Minn.) entered the zone and dished the puck off to Epperson as he poked it between the legs of Scopa. Lapointe netted his first goal of the season after a 200-foot shot snuck past a sprawled out Scopa. Less than :30 seconds later, Christian Humphreys (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went unassisted for his 20th giving Team USA a 4-0 lead to end the second period.

The third period was scoreless and Kempf remained solid, turning aside five more shots in the period, to secure the 26-save shutout and the win.

The Under-17 Team returns to USA Hockey Arena next weekend for a weekend series against Green Bay. For tickets, visit the USA Hockey Arena box office, call 734-453-8400 or click here.
