PLYMOUTH, Mich. Gabe Perreault (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Carter Slaggert  (South Bend, Ind.) scored two goals apiece as the U.S. National Under-18 Team topped Lake Superior State, 5-2 Friday evening at USA Hockey Arena.

The win marked the seventh straight for the U18s to open the season.

Team USA jumped out to a lead at 5:52 of the opening period. Defenseman Paul Fischer (River Forest, Ill.) banked a pass along the left boards to spur Slaggert alone into the offensive zone. The Notre Dame commit veered towards the net and finished five-hole for his first point of the season.

The U18s doubled the advantage before the close of the initial frame. After a Lake State offensive zone turnover, Nathan Tobey (Lantana, Texas) collected and fired a stretch pass for Perreault streaking through the defense. Perreault deked in front of the cage before finishing with a backhand through the five-hole for a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Lakers got on the board 80 seconds into the second period to cut the lead in half. Harrison Roy carried the puck along the left wing and centered a feed for Jared Kucharek who banged a one-timer past Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) to make it a 2-1 contest.

Ryan Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) restored the two-goal lead after he intercepted a neutral-zone pass from Lake State and charged in alone. Leonard faked the goalie on the forehand, transferred to the backhand and flipped his shot into the open cage for his team-leading seventh score of the season and 3-1 U18 lead.

Perreault notched his second of the evening with a power-play score at 18:38 of the second. Smith took the initial shot from the right point that was turned aside by Ethan Langenegger. Will Vote (Arlington, Mass.) was first to the rebound and shifted it to Perreault to make it 4-1.

Slaggert capped the U.S. scoring with his second of the night midway through the final period. He led a 2-on-1 break with Austin Burnevik (Blaine, Minn.) and his intended centering feed went off Langenegger and into the net.

Lake State's Timo Bakos scored late in regulation for the 5-2 final.

Augustine finished the night with 17 saves to push his record to 4-0-0 on the campaign.

The U18s return to home ice tomorrow night as they continue the Kroger College Series against Michigan Tech. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. from USA Hockey Arena and tickets are available at the USA Hockey Arena box office, calling 734-453-8400 or visiting USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix!
