U17s continue play Sept. 30 against Cedar Rapids

BLAINE, Minn. – The U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Maine Nordiques, 7-0, Saturday evening inside the Blaine Super Rink in its final game of the NAHL Showcase.

It was all Maine in the opening frame as the Nordiques quickly got on the board in the first. A pass from behind the net found the blade of Nordique defenseman David Helledy who sent a shot towards screened U.S. netminder Jack Parsons (Cortland, N.Y.) and found the back of the net, 2:15 in. Maine added another midway through the opening frame from forward Patrick Schmiedlin. Laurent Trepanier took the puck through the neutral zone and across the blue line before he dropped a pass back to Schmiedlin and put one through.

James Hagens (Hauppauge, N.Y.) nearly put the U17s on the board with six minutes to go with a backhand try but starting Nordique netminder Thomas Heaney stretched out for the save. Maine went on to get its third of the period on the power play after Nicholas Bernardo sent a shot from the blue line that squeaked in with 4:16 to go.

Maine rolled into the second with momentum and added another tally as Anthony Achille pushed his own rebound across the goal line :34 seconds in. Cole Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass.) was robbed of an opportunity to put the U17s on the board from Heaney prior to Maine putting up one more 13:17 in to make it 5-0 after two.

The Nordiques found the back of the net in the opening minutes of the third off a tipped pass for its sixth of the night. Max Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) nearly found the scoresheet in the final 10 minutes of action, followed by Kamil Bednarik (Elmhurst, Ill.) with a breakaway chance, but Heaney swallowed up the puck. Maine added one more to make it a 7-0 final.

Parsons started in net for the U.S. and stopped 42 shots faced.

The Under-17 Team takes the next week off from games before it’s back on the road Sept. 30 against Cedar Rapids. Puck drop is set for 8pm ET and can be streamed on FloHockey.
