NTDP Notebook Week of Sept. 12-18

Coming off a 1-1 weekend against the Janesville Jets, the U.S. National Under-17 Team returns to NAHL play as it makes the trip to Blaine, Minn. to take on the Johnstown Tomahawks and the Maine Nordiques at the NAHL Showcase.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team opens up the 2022-23 season on the road as it faces off against the Muskegon Lumberjacks Friday, followed by a home matchup against the Lumberjacks in the 5th annual Play with Purpose Game Saturday evening.

Matchup Information

Noteworthy

MY HUMPS: U17 forward Christian Humphreys (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had an eventful NTDP debut as he netted five goals on five shots in a 7-3 win over the Janesville Jets Friday evening.

The Bishop Kearney Selects product put Team USA up 3-0 late in the first period and then added a pair of tallies each in the second and third period for the natural hat trick plus two.

Humphreys was the first NTDP player to score five goals in a game since Chaz Lucius (Grant, Minn.) collected five scores against MSP Magazine at the Minnesota Elite League early in the 2019-20 season.

EASY EISY: Fellow U17 forward Cole Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass.) added Team USA's other pair of goals Friday night as he put the team ahead with two in the opening 12 minutes before Humphreys took over.

Eiserman converted on the power play just 85 seconds into the season off a nice set-up from Max Plante (Hermantown, Minn.) and Cole Hutson (Barrington, Ill.) and made it a multi-goal effort later in the period off a feed from Kamil Bednarik (Elmhurst, Ill.).

The University of Minnesota commit came to the NTDP after putting up 56 goals for Shattuck St. Mary's Prep last season and 97 goals  at the 14U level during the 2020-21 campaign.

REMEMBER YOUR FIRST: After 11 years as an assistant and an associate coach at the NTDP, U17 head coach Nick Fohr (Grand Forks, N.D.) picked up his first victory in the U17s' win over Janesville.

Fohr has been a part of two gold-medal winning staffs (2015, 2017) and three silver-medal winning squads (2013, 2018, 2022) at the IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship.

Fohr will also serve on the U.S. staff at the 2023 World Junior Championship, set to take place in Halifax & Moncton, Canada from December 26, 2022 - January 5, 2023, later this winter.

PLAY WITH PURPOSE: The Under-18 Team kicks off its season with a pair of USHL preseason contests against the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Friday morning and Saturday evening.

Saturday's matchup is the 5th annual "Play With Purpose" charity hockey game, with a 6:00 p.m. puck drop at USA Hockey Arena.

The game will be played at the Mitchel Kiefer Memorial Rink to recognize, remember and honor the sixth anniversary of Mitchel's death due to a distracted driver. The game will help raise awareness in our local Michigan hockey community about the deadly consequences of distracted driving.

UPCOMING PROMOS: Opening Weekend at USA Hockey Arena is quickly approaching and fans can go home with souvenirs, giveaways and player autographs.

The U18s kick off the 2022-23 NTDP home schedule with a pair of Kroger College Series matchups. Come see the boys take on Lake Superior State on Friday, October 7, where all fans in attendance will receive a 2022-23 NTDP magnet schedule, presented by X-Golf Canton.

On the following night, the Under-18 Team plays host to Michigan Tech University, when fans can collect the 2022-23 U18 Team Poster and fill it with autographs from the team after the conclusion of the game.

2022 U18 FIVE NATIONS: USA Hockey Arena is proud to host the 2022 U18 Five Nations Tournament, taking place from November 8-12, 2022, in Plymouth, Michigan.

The best hockey players under the age of 18 from the United States, Czechia, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland will all compete in a round-robin style schedule, facing off against all other teams throughout the week.
