PLYMOUTH, Mich. – USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program had 14 current players selected in the 2022 NHL Draft over the past two days in Montreal. In addition, 11 more with ties to the NTDP were selected by NHL clubs.
The NTDP saw six forwards go in the first round on Thursday evening, beginning with Logan Cooley (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at third overall to Arizona and Cutter Gauthier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) at number five to Philadelphia. Frank Nazar III (Mount Clemens, Mich.) and Rutger McGroarty (Lincoln, Neb.) went back-to-back to the Chicago Blackahwks and Winnipeg Jets at 13 and 14, respectively. Jimmy Snuggerud (Chaska, Minn.) was picked by St. Louis and Isaac Howard (Hudson, Wis.) was selected by Tampa Bay to close out the NTDP’s first-round selections.
On Friday, a trio of NTDP blueliners were selected in the second round. Ryan Chesley (Mahtomedi, Minn.) was first off the board to the Washington Capitals at 37th overall. He was followed by Seamus Casey (Fort Myers, Fla.) at 46th to the New Jersey Devils and Lane Hutson (North Barrington, Ill.) went to the Montreal Canadiens with the 62nd pick. Hutson’s 90 career points at the NTDP ranks second among all two-year defensemen and his 63 points in 2021-22 is the second-most for a blueliner in a single season at the NTDP.
Devin Kaplan (Bridgewater, N.J.) was the 69th overall selection of the draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, the lone NTDP player in the third round.
In the fourth, Cole Spicer (Grand Forks, N.D.) went to the Boston Bruins with the 117th pick, Cruz Lucius (Grant, Minn.) followed to the Carolina Hurricanes at 124 and Charlie Leddy (Fairfield, Conn.) went two picks later to the New Jersey Devils.
Goaltender Tyler Muszelik (Long Valley, N.J.) was the final current NTDP player taken when he was selected by the Florida Panthers with the 189th pick of the draft.
In addition to current full-time NTDPers, 11 players with ties to the program were selected in the draft. NTDP alum Jack Hughes (Westwood, Mass. / NTDP 2019-21) was taken by the Los Angeles Kings with the 51st overall selection in the second round. Zakary Karpa (Newport Beach, Calif. / NTDP 2019-20) is off to the New York Rangers after he was picked at 191 and Jack Devine (Glencoe, Ill. / NTDP 2019-21) rounded out the full-time NTDP alums to the Florida Panthers with the 221st pick.
Four players who skated with the NTDP during the 2021-22 season were selected on Day 2. Cam Lund (Bridgewater, Mass.) went 34th overall to the San Jose Sharks, Michael Callow (South Boston, Mass.) was selected by the Anaheim Ducks, Luke Devlin (Memphis, Tenn.) was picked by Pittsburgh and Brennan Ali (Glencoe, Ill.) is off to the Red Wings.
Three members of Team USA during the 2020-21 campaign were also selected throughout Friday’s portion of the draft. Defenseman Ryan Healey (Hull, Mass.) was picked by Minnesota, Jackson Dorrington (North Reading, Mass.) was chosen by Vancouver and Cade Littler (East Wenatchee, Wash.) went to the Calgary Flames.
Kenny Connors (Glen Mills, Pa.), who skated with the NTDP during the 2019-20 season, was the Kings pick at 103rd overall.
The 25 players connected to the NTDP is the most in any single NHL Draft.
