Minnetian pots game-winner less than a minute into overtime

GENEVA, Ill. - Aram Minnetian (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) scored less than a minute into overtime to give the U.S. National Under-17 Team a 3-2 come-from-behind victory on back-to-back nights over the Chicago Steel.

Minnetian hustled back in the defensive zone to deny Joe Miller a shot early in the extra session and ended up taking the puck back into the offensive zone. He ran a 2-on-1 with Will Vote (Arlington, Mass.) and fired a pinpoint wrist-shot once he got to the left circle to extend the U17s winning streak to five straight games.

Chicago's Sam Lipkin was credited with the only goal of the first period when a Steel shot deflected off a USA defender and into the cage just shy of the halfway mark of the opening frame.

The U17s responded with a pair of goals in the second less than five minutes apart. Vote put Team USA on the board with a spinning shot on a second-chance opportunity. After an impressive forecheck forced a Steel turnover, Alex Weiermair (Los Angeles, Calif.) found Vote with a feed at the right circle. Vote dropped the puck for Charlie Cerrato (Fallston, Md.) who fired the first shot that was stopped, but Vote cleaned up the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

The same trio created a pretty offensive play to give the U17s a lead at 12:55 of the second. Vote's touch-pass led Weiermair into the offensive zone, where he dangled in and out of a defender down the right wing before centering a feed for Cerrato, who tapped his shot between the legs of Gibson Homer.

The Steel took advantage of an early third-period power play to tie the game off the stick of Adam Fantilli, to give him the USHL-lead in goals on the year.

Team USA goaltender Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) was fantastic all evening but made a handful of saves late in regulation to keep the game tied into the extra period. He finished the game with 34 saves to pick up his seventh win of the season.

Minnetian's 3-on-3 tally was his second of the season to give the U17s their first win after regulation this season.

The team returns to home ice on Saturday night when they host the Green Bay Gamblers at USA Hockey Arena.
