Leonard Scores Hat Trick In U17s Shutout Over St. Andrews

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Ten different skaters recorded a multiple-point game, lead by a hat trick from Ryan Leonard (Amherst, Mass.), to give the U.S. National Under-17 Team a 13-0 shutout over St. Andrews College on Saturday afternoon.

 

The U17s kicked off the game with four unanswered goals throughout the first period. Gabe Perreault (Hinsdale, Ill.) got the scoring started on a give-and-go with Will Smith (Lexington, Mass.) for his tenth goal of the season.

After winning a mid-period faceoff, Zeev Buium (San Diego, Calif.) intercepted the puck in Team USA’s offensive zone for a laser to the top shelf on St. Andrew’s netminder Rowan Kimens to take a two-goal advantage.

Highlights

Before the periods end, Leonard would add two unanswered goals, giving the U17s a 4-0 lead. Leonard first scored on a redirection from a shot by Oliver Moore (Mounds View, Minn.) followed by a backhander in front of the crease on assists by Gracyn Sawchyn (Chaska, Minn.) and Kai Janviriya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).

In the opening 54 seconds of the middle frame, Leonard scored his first hat trick of the season. Aram Minnetian (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) and Smith swung the puck up top for a slapshot by Leonard inside the left faceoff circle.

Team USA scored four more unanswered goals to close out the second period. Paul Fischer (River Forest, Ill.) capitalized on a backside tap in off attempt by Perreault. Smith continued the push a breakaway for a shorthanded goal to put us up 7-0.

Beckett Hendrickson (Minnetonka, Minn.) netted one on an open net from just outside the crease on a dump back by Carter Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.). Perreault followed up with his second of the game on a tic-tac-toe play from Alex Weiermair (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Smith.

Weiermair kicked off the final period with a goal scored just 48 seconds in. Off a pass from Perreault, Weiermair fired the puck from the slot into the back of the net for a 10-0 lead.

The Under-17 Team put two more in net courtesy of Moore and Hendrickson. Moore collected the puck from Leonard at the blueline to bury the puck from the left faceoff circle. Just 19 seconds later, Hendrickson scored on a wraparound from behind St. Andrews’ net for a 12-0 lead.

In finalizing their victory over St. Andrews, Will Vote (Arlington, Mass.) netted the one-timer from inside the slot on assists from Austin Burnevik (Blaine, Minn.) and Buium.

Carsen Musser (Sherburn, Minn.) and Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) both took a turn in net for Team USA for a combined 15 saves. 

The boys are back on the road next weekend as they travel for a pair against the Chicago Steel. Games are slated for Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 20 at 4:00 p.m. The action be seen on HockeyTV.
