U17s Topped Selects, 5-2, At NAHL Top Prospects Tournament

Vote tallied two goals in Team USA's victory

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The U.S. National Under-17 team topped the Selects, 4-2, in game one of the 2022 NAHL Top Prospects tournament on Monday afternoon.

majority possession, Team USA had its opportunities including back-to-back possession with from Ryan Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) and Alex Weiermair (Los Angeles, Calif.) from close range.

Michael Chambre (Fort Myers, Fla.) got the start in net for Team USA. In the first 20 minutes of action, the netminder made 12 saves on 12 shots to keep the game scoreless heading into the second.

The Under-17 team wasted no time getting on the board with a goal from Will Vote (Arlington, Mass.) 45 seconds into the second period. The charge was led by Austin Burnevik (Blaine, Minn.) who found Beckett Hendrickson (Minnetonka, Minn.) coming up the left side boards. Hendrickson fed a centering pass into the slot to Vote for a one-timer and a 1-0 lead.

With 8:03 to play in the middle frame, Leonard knocked the puck loose at the blueline which was quickly picked up by Oliver Moore (Mounds View, Minn.). Moore skated wide to the left side before burying a wrist shot from the faceoff circle for a 2-0 advantage. 

Selects’ forward Graham Harris tallied a goal before the period’s end as he carried the puck up the right side from the neutral zone for a shot at the top of the crease. Nick Ring was credited with the lone assist.

Charlie Cerrato (Fallston, Md.) lifted one top shelf at the 9:30 marker of the third period to put the U17s back up by two. Aram Minnetian (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) and Gracyn Sawchyn (Chaska, Minn.) assisted on Cerrato’s second goal of the season. 

To cut the lead again, the Selects collected a goal courtesy of Michael Mesic late in the period, assisted by Stepan Kuznetsov.

Team USA secured the win on back-to-back empty net goals from Vote and Sawchyn in the final 1:23 of the game. Chambre, with 60 minutes of play, finished with 26 saves on 28 shots.

The U17s continue action tomorrow in Pittsburgh for their final game of the tournament. They will face Team East with puck drop slated for 2 p.m. ET. All the action can be caught on HockeyTV.
